With this Sunday’s closing ceremony, the flame goes out on the headline event in winter sport for another four years. Northern Italy has delighted thousands of fans with over two weeks of thrilling, high-stakes action, but happy memories of attending the flagship show in the snow may not extend to the cost of being there.
Using ECA’s Daily Rates, we compare what visitors can expect to spend on a typical day in the latest and upcoming host locations. Those who visited both Beijing in 2022 as well as Milan in 2026 will have felt the difference, with daily costs nearly double in the Italian host, driven in part by far higher hotel prices.
Fans looking ahead to 2030 and 2034 should see some respite in their future trips, with cheaper hotel prices in the next two host locations easing cost pressures. However, the cost of meals and drinks in the French Alps and Utah is similar to Milan, so the low costs of the 2022 edition look to be an outlier.
Daily costs, decoded
ECA’s Daily Rates involve calculating the average daily cost for business travellers in 466 locations in 195 countries. They include hotel rooms (3, 4 and 5 star), meals, drinks, transport, laundry and incidental costs, with each of these expenses itemised in the reports.
They enable organisations to anticipate the cost of business trips and short-term assignments, equipping them with robust, location-specific data to help calculate allowances for short trips abroad.
