Case study: HSBC

Design and implementation of a custom salary management programme

HSBC has around 9,500 offices in 85 countries and territories, so employee mobility is an integral part of its operations.  Having subscribed to ECA’s services for over thirty years, HSBC appointed ECA to design and implement a new assignment salary management system to help them with their 1400 long-term assignees in 50 locations.

The key objectives of the project were to improve efficiency, accuracy, consistency and transparency of calculation and data storage while reducing operational costs and allowing the business to react quickly to international opportunities. The new system needed to be able to incorporate all elements of HSBC’s policy for consistency of application whilst accommodating the inevitable policy deviations, be accessible from HSBC’s three regional hubs and be completely secure.

“We can now calculate and store salary packages for all of the Group’s international assignees efficiently and with a transparency that our previous legacy systems did not allow.”

ECA’s software team prototyped a new solution for HSBC based on ECAEnterprise, a comprehensive, data-populated web-enabled salary calculator and database, and then developed the prototype in close collaboration with HSBC through a shared website.  HSBC worked with both ECA’s client services and software experts, who advised on both policy and technical matters, ensuring the system fulfilled HSBC’s policy objectives and user needs.

On time and on budget, the legacy systems were successfully replaced by the customised, hosted version of ECAEnterprise, with a seamless transition between the old and the new systems. At the time the new web-enabled tool became operational, users in all three of HSBC’s hubs had been trained on-site by ECA staff.

Harry Lister, Senior Manager Benefits and International Mobility, is pleased with the new system. “HSBCEnterprise fulfils all of the business goals we set out to achieve. We can now calculate and store salary packages for all of the Group’s international assignees efficiently and with a transparency that our previous legacy systems did not allow. We enjoyed close collaboration with ECA’s project team during the development of HSBCEnterprise and it was delivered both on time and on budget.”

ECA continues to work in partnership with HSBC’s international mobility team through data provision, technical support and advice on mobility practice.
